Best Backpacks for 2018

Backpacks these days are no longer uncomfortable and cumbersome.  Gone are those days.

Today backpacks are ergonomically designed and developed with comfort and durability in mind.  Below are reviews of some of the best backpacks of 2018.

Osprey Atmos AG65

This is a great backpack and is not only comfortable and durable but also offers organisation and is light weighing only 4 lbs.  The pack has an “anti-gravity” back panel, which allows for better ventilation.

This mesh back panel means that your back, spine and hips are protected from protruding panels.  The pockets are well designed; the only feature missing is a zip for the main compartment.  It is durable and great for all kind of hikes; short overnight hikes to longer trips.  Even though the Atmos is light is can carry heavy gear well.

HMG 2400 and 3400 Southwest

Both these pack from Hyperlite Mountain Gear are light, offer weather resistance and durability.  Although these have a minimal design their frames are sturdy compared to other lightweight backpacks.  Made from DFC fabric these packs are considered very strong and are resistant to bad weather.

A good addition to buy with either of these packs is the HMG stuff sacks or pods that will help to keep these packs extra dry, so if you want to play the bingo Canada has to offer on your phone, you can pop it in here and it will stay dry during your walk. These packs may cost more, but they will last for many years and many miles.  The 2400 is great for 3 to 5 day hikes while the 3400 is recommended for carrying more gear.

REI Co-Op Traverse 70

REI has changed their design for 2018 and includes new features and better quality.  This is a well-designed pack with a J shaped zipper allowing easy access to the main section with plenty of outside pockets and a cover for the rain.

The pack also features an UpLift compression strap system that makes the backpack comfortable taking strain off the lower back and hips.  Despite all of these great features this backpack is great value for money.

Gossamer Gear Gorilla 40

This well-designed pack is not only comfortable but has also been developed to last.  It is designed for both men and women and features a unisex ergonomic hip belt.  Designed to carry weight well it also has a SitLight pad which can be removed and adds extra back padding and can be used as a cushion.

The frame is made from aluminium and has padded shoulder straps and the hip belt can be removed.  The top zip pocket is great for keeping smaller items.

Gregory Optic 48

The Optic 48 is a lightweight pack that is comfortable and carries weight well by transferring weight to the hips.  This pack is also great for heavier loads and the pack offers extra features and pockets.

The only down side with this pack is that parts of the pack are not as durable.  The upside is that it is a solid pack with an affordable price tag.   Included with this backpack is a rain cover and it is also hydration compatible.
